The County Kilkenny village of Kilmacow is situated some 4 miles south of Mullinavat and about 5 miles north of Waterford City. Although it is a small village, it still consists of an Upper and Lower Kilmacow, and they jointly held race meetings in the mid-1800s. The Waterford Chronicle reported on the meeting which took place at Kilmacow on Monday 1st April 1839. The impression from the article was that the meeting was the first such meeting over a 2 mile course of sporting country, but was so successful that it should be repeated in future years. However, there are no records to indicate that further meetings were staged. The meeting opened with a Match in which Mr William’s chosen horse defeated Mr Langaan’s horse after a draw in the first heat, while the Farmer’s Saddle and Bridle was won by Mr Rowe’s selection from a field of three other runners, and the closing Whip and Spurs went to a farmer from the neighbouring village, defeating two rivals. |
